The following facts are based on Rudy Giuliani’s tenure as Mayor of New York City:
- Inherited $2.3 Billion deficit when he began as Mayor of New York City
- Enacted $2.5 Billion in tax reductions – 23 city taxes were reduced or eliminated
- Growth in city spending was reduced dramatically – from an average increase of 7.4% to below 4% during his last 6 years (1995 and 2002 had reductions in spending)
- Rudy left New York City with a $2.9 billion surplus
- Created 450,000 new jobs through strategic developments, business partnerships, and by breaking up crime’s influence on the job market
- Created one of the most successful welfare-to-work programs – the initiative cut the number of people on welfare in half, helping move over 600,000 individuals off welfare (from over 1.1 million to under 500,000) by changing the welfare agency into the employment agency and creating 27 job centers throughout the city
- Increased rate of home ownership by 10%
